John Fielder’s photograph together with Robert Wogrin’s paintings and drawings make a spectacular book. The pair directs how Colorado’s fourteeners were originally named and then changed through time. John Fielder’s photos are as outstanding as ever.

Skiing and Sleeping on the Summits
This book is a sequel to Colorado’s Sleeping on the Summits. This book explores the winter adventures of Dr. Jon Kedrowski as he skis (and sometimes sleeps) on top of volcanic mountains in Washington, Oregon and norther California. The trick for me was to design each page different to keep the reader interested and motivated to turn the page. We added more detailed maps to give more information.

A Colorado Autumn
This is a beautiful book. My challenge was to make the photography look incredible. He takes wonderful images, so most of my work was done. Getting the pacing correct, and side-by-side image selection was a joy as much as a struggle. I wish we could have printed all the images John sent. The narrowing down was difficult!

The Colorado River
This book chronicles the Colorado River from its start in Colorado until it runs dry in Arizona. The photography is wonderful (thank you Pete McBride), the story of the river is poignant. As a designer, my job was to showcase the photography and text; to let the reader experience the river through imagery. I created the maps to help tell the story. Then used then as chapter openers to further describe different sections of the river.

Denver Mountain Parks: 100 Years of the Magnificent Dream
2014 COLORADO BOOK award winner!
Denver Mountain Parks is the latest book from John Fielder and commemorates 100 years of Mountain Park development. There were four authors of this book, a photographer, and several sources for historical images. The book is split into two history chapters and one more current, guidebook-type chapter. Each chapter has a different author. The supporting artwork is a blend of historical images and more current color images. My biggest challenge was to harmonize the words and text, while developing each chapter’s personality.

Wilderness Act 50th Anniversary poster
This poster celebrates 50th years of the Colorado Wilderness Act. Yeah! It was a fundraiser and awareness project for Poudre Wilderness Volunteers, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance. Yikes! Lots of rounds of approval!
Sleeping on the Summit
These two men, Chris Tomer and Jon Kedrowski, slept on all 55 Colorado 14ers in one summer. This book is proof. Each summit has a pair sunset and sunrise images. My challenge is designing this title was to make each summit look unique, not just a bunch of sunset/sunrise images, whiling adding the personalities of the authors.
